Education Enhances Patient Health

From our Spring 2024 Team Insider

Ask anyone who has been serving on a medical mission team for a while, it is clearly evident the medical work you provide has had a significant positive impact on the residents of the Dept. of Colón. Teams reportedly encounter much less malnutrition, parasites, and wound infections. But they also report alarming increases of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension.

Health education is the next step we can take in helping the community learn healthy habits. Over
the years teams have provided education on a wide variety of health issues – from pregnancy, infant care and lactation, to diabetes, nutrition, and CPR. Every class has been met with enthusiasm from
our neighbors in Honduras. They are eager to learn.

What health topics do you think are most important to teach our patients about next year? How can
we coordinate efforts across teams to make sure we are providing clear and consistent message?

Over the summer you will receive short survey via email asking for your help in planning for the future. Please take the time to help – your opinions are important as we look towards the future! In
the meantime, if you have any thoughts or suggestions, please email us at [email protected].
